Museum of Modern Art was opened at the end of the March last year in Baku, created on the initiative of the First Lady of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva and with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
There is no strict theme in the museum or imposed routes. Any two points, two exhibits, two segments are linked in the museum. The idea of the architectural lines of the museum is in rooms without corners, open walkways, sloping walls at different angles, it allows you to create a multi – faceted perspective view pictures, there is the appearance of movement, and the metal beams and structures throughout the space form a single "moving" abstract structure. The museum has no closed form. Two floors are located in the whole open space and connected to the object of "Forgotten ladder". The author of the concept of the museum, architecture and design, installation, selection of collections and displays is the artist Altai Sadiq – Zadeh.
Openness of the Museum to new ideas and experiments, provides the opportunity to get acquainted with the extraordinary works of such artists as Rasim Babayev, Ashraf Murad, Gennady Brezhatyuk, Nadzhafov Fazil, Mamed Mustafaev, Useynov Yeah, Ibadullayev Ali, Mir Nadir Zeynalov, Fuad Salaev, Farhad Khalilov, Darwin Velibekov, Eldar Mammedov, Mikail Abdurahmanov, Museib Amirov, Mahmud Rustamov, Hussein Hagverdi, Eliyar Alimirzaev, Rashad Babaev, Altai Sadiq – Zadeh, whose works in the context of Azerbaijani art 60 – 70s hit its innovative language. The main objective of the project is to protect and develop the Azerbaijani school of painting, including a program of support for young, bright and has received the recognition of artists such as Niyaz Najafov, Rashad Babaev, Vugar Muradov, whose works are also displayed in our museum. However, the exposition features works of the great European masters – the founders of the avant – garde style in the world of art – Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall. Classics of Western realism are represented by several paintings from a private collection. The key idea of the museum is a special approach to the formation of a special space for the framing of contemporary art in Azerbaijan, taking into account the avoidance of analogy with known modern European museums.
Azerbaijani fine art can be called the "internal memory" of our people. There is also a collection of classical figurative art: Sattar Bahlulzade, Salah Tahir, Mikail Abdullayev, Huseyn Aliyev, Tags Taghiyev, Nadir Abdurahmanov, Elmira Shakhtakhtinskaya, Nadir Gasimov, Oktay Sadiq -Zadeh, Tokay Mammadov, Tughril Narimanbeyov and Omar Eldar. Museum of Modern Art is a kind of storehouse of masterpieces of the modern era, has granted more than 800 works of art by Azerbaijani artists and sculptors of the last 70th anniversary. Part of the exhibition includes "unknown" layer of national painting, referring to the flow of the "other" art which emerged during the Soviet era. This are a unique works of Ashraf Murad, Kamal Ahmed, Jawad Mirdzhavad, Rasim Babayev, that were rescued from certain death by the museum. The presence of these works of the artists in the exhibition is a tribute to the historical justice.
Contrary to the classical traditions of the museum, the exhibition continues even outside the exhibition space, being present in the spaces of art cafe and restaurant. The museum also conducts exhibition of children's art, which provides an opportunity for the development of interest in children and bringing them into the world of beauty, a video room, designed for the screening of the documentary, exhibition hall for private exhibitions, a library and a bookstore, where visitors are given a collection of books on the history of art, architecture and sculpture.
The unifying factor was color: the museum settled in white. The entire museum as a whole with its free architecture, with an exhibition of paintings and sculptures, the museum itself is a product of the avant-garde art.
