In 1936, in the Azerbaijan State Museum has created the Department of arts (formed in 1920). The Department has opened in 1937. In 1934, the museum was given the name of R. Mustafayev. There are over 12,000 works of art. The exhibition is presented samples of the Azerbaijan fine and decorative art, folk art of different historical periods. The museum preserves the works of the founders of Azerbaijani realistic art Mirza Kadima Erivan, M. Navvab B. Kangarli, A. Azimzade and the best works of Azerbaijani contemporary artists. There are also jewelry, carpets and ceramics, national costumes, archaeological jewels. There are the works of I. K. Aivazovsky, N. I. Argunova, V. L. Borovikovsky, K. P. Bryullov, V. A. Tropinin, V. E. Makovsky, K. A. Korovin, I. I. Levitan and others in the Department of Russian art. There are the paintings of Guercino, M. Mirevelta, Y.Systermans , A. Ostade, G. Dughet in the Department of Western European art.
